Memory

Memory processing may be fundamental to consciousness. Maybe distinction between high level conscious processing and low level subconscious processing is that the former is stored in memory and the latter is not, i.e. low level processing creates experiences as well but they are not incorporated into memory and thus exist as discrete, momentary events, where as sufficiently high level processing is stored in memory and contributes somewhat to the experience of the next thought/feeling. So consciousness is actually the experience of currently generated experience plus attenuated versions of what was previously experienced.
