Rational vs. Rationalizing

Black & white thinking with self deception was likely selected for evolutionarily. In cases of dispute, convincing oneself that the other party is wrong enables the engagement of emotions that make threats credible (see How the Mind Works by Stephen Pinker). This explains why humans are more rationalizing animals than rational animals when it comes to interpersonal issues.
